Caleb stared into Wylie’s eyes and felt his own start to glow. Sharpening his focus, he sank into his friend’s mind and searched out memories. Wylie was thinking about his time as an owl, which was good, but Caleb needed to go a bit further back.

He searched and found a good time. With an extra boost of power, he floated along Wylie’s memories of Yarom, Emory and himself walking through some thick woods. Yarom’s bright blue eyes were alight with laughter as Emory joked about Wylie not solving his last case on his own. And how it wouldn’t have been solved without Emory.

Caleb could feel Wylie roll his eyes. Wylie was a serious investigator. Emory was obviously trying to get his friend to loosen up. A cry sounded and all three men looked around. Yarom motioned them to move forward quietly. All three had walked a few yards when suddenly a man came crashing through the woods toward them.

The man was looking over his shoulder in quick hurried glances. Before they could assess the whole situation, a man yelling, “Must kill,” rushed onto the scene and threw a knife that buried deeply into the man’s back. The guy pitched forward and twitched on the ground. Blood oozed from his mouth.

The chanting man looked at all three friends. The crazed man raised his voice and charged Emory, who was the closest.

Emory dodged a blow and then hit the man in the nose. With blood running down his chin, the man went after Emory again. This time, he pulled a knife from his pocket and tried to stab their friend. Emory growled and used his vampire speed to knock the knife out of the chanting man’s hand and shove him to the ground.

The sound of running feet caught Wylie’s attention. “He’s on drugs or something and it sounds like he’s not alone. We should get out of here.”

A cackling laughter echoed through Wylie’s mind. A shiver slithered up Caleb’s spine.

Three humans came into focus. They were all chanting, “Must kill.”

“Let’s go. I don’t want to kill them,” Yarom said.

“Me either,” Emory agreed as Wylie nodded his own agreement.

The laughter came again. It was just as chilling as it had been the first time.

“Looks like I’ve got some new pets.” The voice was full of malice.

Wylie looked around and as foreign words were being spoken, he glimpsed a tall spotted being a second before the world changed dramatically.

Colors became less intense, but dark and light sharpened. A hoot came from Wylie and others could be heard along with that evil laughter.

Hands grabbed Wylie and a blurred human image tucked Wylie under his arm. Air rushed through newly developed feathers and Wylie’s brain shut down. Hoots could be heard randomly and then vehicle doors were opened and closed. Blurred images flashed before Wylie’s eyes. His brain tried to function properly, but it couldn’t.

Light disappeared as material covered Wylie’s head. There were flashes of conversation, but none of it made sense. Caleb was about to leave Wylie’s distorted memory when the sound of doors opening drew him in.
